How to prevent cervical cancer:
Primary prevention (actions to prevent the appearance of injuries):
· Vaccination against Human Papillomavirus (VHP) is very effective against high-risk subtypes, which are HPV16 and HPV18, responsible for 70% of cases. · Vaccination is recommended for children 11-12 years old. If it has not been received at this age, vaccination is recommended for girls aged 13 to 26 and for boys aged 13 to 21.
Currently, vaccination is recommended regardless of age, especially in immunosuppressed patients.
Secondary prevention (actions designed to detect pre-established injuries early):
· Cervical cytology is the best method of protection against this tumor in healthy adult women. It is recommended for women between 25 and 30 years old. It will be repeated preferably annually up to 65 years old.
· The HPV test is a specific test to assess the presence of the virus in the DNA of the cells of the cervix and if it is at high risk. If the test is positive, more tests will be done.
